Online Casino in Canada

We've reviewed 100s of online casinos and feature the top online casinos in Canada. These casinos offer fast payouts of winnings to all provinces, including Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, Ontario, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, PEI, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Yukon.

Ontario players can rest assured that all casinos listed are licensed and regulated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

The Status of Online Casinos in Canada

Each province has its own legislation when it comes to online gambling, and apart from Ontario, which has an open and thriving gambling market, the rest of the territories all have a rather similar state of affairs on the subject. Gambling is legal in all of Canada, but only Ontario has a regulatory body that can license numerous online casinos.

Ontario Players: Separate List for You

If you are playing in Ontario, then you will find many more legal options to pick from. Instead of carrying on here, you can quickly switch to our Ontario Top Online Casinos page, where we have listed out what we consider the best online casinos available in Ontario.

The list is quite different from the one we would recommend to the other provinces, as the legal landscape is completely different.

Legislation in the Rest of Canada (Outside ON)

In British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, the Britich Columbian Lotteries Corporation's online platform (PlayNow) is the only licensed gaming platform. The same goes for Alberta (PlayAlberta), and Quebec (Loto-Quebec). In the Atlantic Territories: Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, the Atlantic Lottery Corporation runs the scene, officially.

The provinces outside Ontario have regulatory agencies to set a standard for online gambling, and they have programs to help educate players about the dangers of gambling. But, they have a monopoly on online gambling, and only provide one locally licensed platform to pick from. If they have even one official online casino to offer, some provinces, such as Nova Scotia, don't even have that. Though, the gambling laws in each state do not prohibit players from signing up at international online casinos. There are warnings about the dangers of these types of sites. And there definitely are dangers if you are signing up to an online casino that is completely unregulated.

But there is a grey area between the two. A lot of online casinos that operate in Canada, albeit outside of the local regulations, have licensure abroad. They are governed by renowned gambling authorities who have licensed hundreds, if not thousands of online casinos all over the world. These regulators include the Malta Gaming Authority, the UK Gambling Commission, UK outlying territory authorities (Alderney, Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Antigua and Barbuda, and more), and even the Kahnawake Gaming Commission.

Playing at a Safe and Licensed Online Casino

So, there are regulated online casinos that serve Canadians, but technically, they don't run with the blessing of the local authorities. What this means for you, as a player, is that generally these operators are based abroad. For example, in Kahnawake, Alderney, Malta, and so on. There are some pros and cons to this, which we will lay out clearly here.

Pros:

  • Military grade encryption software and security firewalls
  • They support many banking options, including Interac/Instadebit
  • Large pool of resources for picking games and adding special features
  • Bespoke mobile gaming apps and optimised playing “on-the-go”
  • You can use the same casino app in multiple Canadian states or even abroad

Cons:

  • They may not have Canadian phone support
  • Some games or features may be restricted in specific provinces
  • No local legal representation to handle any disputes

Now that we have looked at the legal aspect of online gambling in Canada, let's crack on with the top online casinos.

Gambling Landscape in Canada

The Canadian gaming legislation varies between provinces, but online gambling is not illegal in Canada. On a federal level, no law prohibits you from playing online casino games, but there are restrictions on gambling at establishments not owned or licensed by a provincial government. The Canadian Criminal Code was amended in 1985, allowing parlay-style bets and pari-mutuel gambling at provincial lotteries. This was later changed again in 2021 with Bill C-218, to allow single-event sports betting.

Online casino gaming falls into a gray area where the Criminal Code is concerned. You can play at online casinos that are based in foreign jurisdictions, but for the most part, they are not regulated by Canadian provinces. This is the case for almost all Canadian provinces except for Ontario. In Ontario, the market is open for international operators, and they are regulated by iGaming Ontario, which is a subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

Foreign casino operators can apply for licenses with iGaming Ontario, and when they are green-lighted by the commission, they can run legally in Ontario. This means independent testers must verify all their games to ensure fairness, and online casinos must offer approved payment options, responsible gambling tools, and proper support services to Ontarian gamers. However, they are not required to establish a headquarters in Ontario or provide phone support.

Legal Gambling Age and Taxation

The legal age for gambling in Canada varies between provinces. In Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec the minimum age is 18 years old. In other provinces, including BC and Ontario, the legal gambling age is 19+. Though the legal age for buying lottery tickets and bingo in Ontario is 18+.

Another thing to consider is that in Canada your gambling winnings are not taxable income. This is in direct contrast with the US, where you are mandated to pay federal and state taxes (where applicable). If you are a professional gambler in Canada, then you would have to pay taxes on your gambling winnings. However, the majority of casual sports bettors and online gamers are not affected.

Provincial Online Casinos

In the other provinces, online gaming is usually the monopoly of the provincial government. In the maritime provinces, the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC) holds the monopoly on the online gaming and sports betting markets. The ALC is partnered with IGT, and has a decent portfolio of games. But if you are seeking a greater variety of casino games, then you may find ALC.ca quite limited. The same goes for the Quebec provincial online casino, or the one in Alberta, PlayAlberta.

If you have ever played at international online casinos before, then you will be familiar with the endless slots, dynamic table games, and tremendous volume of live dealer tables that they have to offer. The ALC online casino and provincial online establishments cannot compete with them in terms of size and variety. The majority of these online establishments are regulated by iGaming Ontario and run completely legally in Ontario. Even if they do not yet have a license with iGaming Ontario, you can rest assured that our chosen online casinos all have stellar reputations. They are regulated in foreign gaming jurisdictions such as in Malta, the UK, and several others.

Gambling Dangers and How to Avoid Them

Risk taking is one of the main thrills that we seek out when we play casino games. It can bring a feel-good factor when your roulette bet pays off, or you are on a roll with your slots gaming. It is quite easy to zone out and immerse yourself in the highs and lows. While that is all good and well, you should never play to excess. No matter how confident you may feel about your chances of winning, or how good your blackjack strategy is, no one is immune to losses. The psychology behind casino games can be quite a vicious and unforgiving cycle.

When staking money, you will feel a mixed range of emotions. Gambler's stress comes in at the thought of you losing your bet, and the remorse that would come thereafter. But you also feel a surge of motivation. The anticipation of a win, and how that would feel causes your brain to release dopamine. And if you do win, your efforts are paid off, and your risk-taking venture is seemingly reinforced. Which could easily prompt you to want to play more. Or, if you lose, you may feel stimulated to try again.

This cycle of anticipation, stress, winner's high and remorse will change your dopamine regulation after you play for a while. As it does, you may build or experience some cognitive biases. For instance, buying into winning or losing streaks. Or, if one specific bet or game is going well for you, then believing in the hot hand fallacy, in that this luck will continue. Other fallacies include trying to read patterns out of historical results, or being too confident in your ability to quit while you are ahead, the gambler's conceit.

How Gambling Really Works

In reality, games are not designed to follow a specific pattern, and they are most certainly not rigged. Instead, these games are designed to give the house an edge in a completely different way. Namely, by shaving off a small portion of the winnings so that you need to win more times than the math suggests to break even. The simplest example is with a roulette bet. Your straight bet covers 1 number, out of a possible 37 (in French or European roulette). But the payout is just 35/1, or 36x your bet. Therefore, instead of winning 1 out of every 37 rounds, as is mathematically sound, you need to win 1 from every 36 spins to break even.

It works the same for virtually all games, and the more complicated the rules, the more difficult it is to calculate the house edge. For instance, in video poker, small changes in the paytable can change the video poker RTP significantly. Or, rules such as Hard/Soft 17 in blackjack can increase the house edge ever so slightly. In slots, we don't know the exact probability of the outcomes as they use powerful algorithms to determine each round. And these are tested using the Monte Carlo method, using hundreds of thousands of simulations, by third party auditors for fair play.

Gambler's Ruin and Maths

One thing you can be certain of, if you run the numbers and calculate your returns in any casino game, they all point to the same place. That is, ultimately you should go bust with your gaming, or the gambler's ruin. But that is not set in stone either. You could walk away from an hour of baccarat gaming with a streak of big wins. Or, hit a Royal Flush in video poker on your 10th go, giving you a stellar payout. These games run on pure chance, and there is no way of guaranteeing wins, or avoiding losses.

Playing Responsibly

If you want to play regularly, then you must create a bankroll for your account. This is basically a budget that you will stick to, and never exceed. It also requires allocating funds for each round of gaming. For instance, using 1% to 3% of your bankroll for each hand or round. Of course, there are strategies and betting systems where this stake changes after each round, but you should try to create a system that works for your budget. At licensed online casinos in Canada, you can use deposit limits to ensure you stick to your planned budget.

The other great tool is reality checks. These help you monitor how much time you spend gambling. Plus, they are the best way to avoid falling into psychological traps or getting tired during your gaming. Take regular breaks, and if you are starting to feel the pressure mount, quit immediately. The absolute worst thing to do is chase your losses after gambling for a longer period of time.

Should you require further help, there are several organisations you can reach out to that provide gambling advice. In Canada, there are helplines for each province, a national gambling helpline, and several sources where you can get free counsel about how to gamble responsibly.

Future of iGaming Industry in Canada

Ontario is currently the only Canadian province to have an open gambling market. Alberta has expressed interest in following in Ontario's footsteps. In Quebec, Loto-Quebec runs the province's gambling market. It has turned down proposals to open up the single-platform monopoly, but the interest there is also piling up. In British Columbia, the gambling market is run by the BCLC. While the BCLC expanded its portfolio recently by partnering with Evolution Gaming, the demand for internationally regulated online casinos runs high.

Ontario's model has benefitted the province, bringing in lots of revenue and employment, and boosting gaming tourism in Ontario. It is also extremely safe, something that other provinces have struggled with in recent years. Therefore, breaking the provincial government monopoly on gambling should not hurt each state's revenue, but there are other concerns. Responsible gambling and addiction are some of the major problems that provinces deal with, especially in PEI. Another concern is the First Nations casinos, and how the injection of international online casinos can hurt their business. In 2024, the First Nations challenged Ontario over its gambling legislation, but the Ontario Superior Court dismissed the case.

As Ontario leads the charge and continues to profit from its gambling regulatory framework, we expect several provinces to follow. Alberta is most likely next, and from there, a number of provinces may jump on the bandwagon.
