Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn — Everything We Know

A44 Games has taken the opportunity to segue its latest project into the limelight—an action RPG that goes by the name of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn. In a similar vein to Ashen, the studio’s first working title, players will be handed an open world to explore—a realm in which the fallen walk among men and women, ushering in a new era of oppression and dismay.

So, what more do you need to know about the upcoming RPG? Are there any precautionary measures that need explaining? Well, here’s everything we’ve been able to scrape together on the matter since it first made its formal debut. Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn: what, when, and why?

What Is Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn?

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is an upcoming open world action-RPG that transports you to a realm engulfed in an ongoing war between the living and the dead. Fighting alongside the former, you will embark on a quest to rid the undead armies that scour the world. However, with the Gods against you and the Door to the Afterlife pouring out forsaken souls, you will need to “forge a bond like no other” and defy the odds. And not just the odds — but the Gods themselves.

In other words: “Join humanity’s last stand as Gods and guns collide in an all-new action-RPG open-world adventure.” Quite the ambitious project, then. But what about the story and, most importantly, the actual gameplay?

Story

Flintlock casts you as a combatant in the coalition army—a unit of headstrong soldiers who are tasked with driving back the armies of the dead. With the Door to the Afterlife burst wide open, the Gods now threaten to dismantle the final fragments of humankind. It is here that you, along with your dying troupe of soldiers, will make your final stand and drive back the Gods.

In A44 Games’ own words: “Join Nor Vanek, a member of the coalition army, and your companion Enki, a strange creature gifted with magical powers, in their personal vendetta against the gods.”

“The Door to the Afterlife has been opened, allowing the old God’s army of the undead to escape from within,” the blurb continues. “The living are on the brink of extinction. It’s time for the coalition army to retake their world. Embrace vengeance, gunpowder and magic and embark on an epic journey to lead mankind’s final siege against the tide of the dead.”

Gameplay

An open world RPG at heart, Flintlock will host all the familiar components as seen in most games of its caliber; high-octane combat, vast open biomes, and a plethora of story-driven quests to undertake. And that’s only scratching the surface from the looks of the blurb, which also goes on to feature elements including a “demanding yet rewarding combat system”, and “powerful combos” that will supposedly let you unleash your inner button-mashing creative side.

“Explore a dangerous open world. Fly through the desert sands, journey through cavernous ruins, and unveil the secrets that lie in the towering City of Dawn,” the blurb adds. “Reassemble the Blackstream sappers, a team of crack explosives and weaponry experts, to lend their skills in the last siege against the gods.”

Combat-wise, Flintlock will divide its attention between standard gunplay, and magic-infused abilities. As a wielder of elemental powers and a repertoire of savage weapons, you will take the fight to the enemy’s front door—serving as a one-person army against an entire underworld of tainted souls.

Development

A44 Games first lifted the veil on Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn back in 2022, at which point in revealed not only a rough 2023 release window, but an in-depth trailer to boot. Since then, it’s been pretty touch and go with the project, which has left eager fans pondering the same question — when will Flintlock finally grace the system? And the answer to that, unfortunately, is nobody knows. “Early 2023” though, apparently.

Flintlock will serve as the studio’s second video game, with its first, Ashen, launching back in 2018. Going by the details left out by the New Zealand-based firm, it will also be finding its way to Xbox Game Pass as a day-one launch title. A ticket to PlayStation Plus has yet to be confirmed.

Caught your eye yet? If so, then you’ll be pleased to know that A44 Games did actually release a trailer for Flintlock a little ways back. And while it didn’t shed light on a concrete release date, it did go on to paint a vague “early 2023” window on it. You can see the trailer in full in the video embedded above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn will be coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store in “early 2023.” It’ll also be heading to Xbox Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate as a day-one launch title, which is twice as convenient for Xbox fans.

At the time of writing, neither A44 Games nor its publisher have mentioned about any special editions outside of the standard copy. Does this mean it’s unlikely to receive any ahead of its eventual 2023 launch? It’s hard to say. But given the fact we’re awfully close to the release window and that A44 Games has yet to shed light on the matter, it does seem unlikely.
